The medical condition known as osteomyelitis can be difficult to treat. It is important to take a sample of the bone in order to choose the right treatment strategy.
Like any in other tissue, infections can manifest in the bone tissue. If the bone infection is superficial (i.e. the bone marrow is not affected), this is known as ostitis. If, however, the bone marrow is also affected the condition is referred to as osteomyelitis and may be very difficult to treat. In addition to surgical intervention, osteomyelitis often entails antibiotic therapy for an extended period (several weeks).
As there are various forms of osteomyelitis which may require different treatment, thorough clinical and imaging diagnostic procedures are important. A suspected diagnosis of osteomyelitis should always be confirmed by sampling the bone region concerned in order to rule out other bone conditions and to ensure optimum treatment.
