Tumour screening

Durch regelmäßige Vorsorgeuntersuchungen können Tumore frühzeitig erkannt werden. Das verbessert die Heilungschancen.

Facial skin lesions are usually caused by normal ageing. Dermal changes in sun-exposed skin, especially facial skin, should always be examined by an experienced physician. A small biopsy (under local anaesthesia) is required to determine whether the skin changes are benign and malignant. Further treatment will then be discussed on the basis of the biopsy results. Any surgery in the facial or neck region should be performed in such a way that visible scarring is avoided.

Tissue changes may also occur in the oral cavity and affect the mucosa. Mucosal changes in the mouth that do not disappear spontaneously within three weeks should be checked out by a medical professional. Tumours in the oral cavity may also be caused by the loosening of teeth. When the swelling increases, speech and swallowing may be impaired.

Prevention is crucial to detect such disorders early. So please see your specialist regularly and have the necessary screening! The earlier skin changes are identified, the better your chances are of being successfully treated and achieving an aesthetically pleasant result.

Statistically, patients who have received successful tumour treatment are still at a higher risk of recurrence, metastasis (formation of subsidiary tumours) or secondary tumours. So appropriate follow-up care is a vital part of any tumour treatment.

Follow-up care should include regular clinical examinations and, at longer intervals, imaging scans for comparison. If any skin or mucosal changes or enlarged lymph nodes are identified in the context of such follow-up examinations, the physician will have to decide whether to perform a biopsy for histological assessment. A treatment plan tailored to the specific needs of each patient should be developed.
