Pre-op-instructions

Please follow the instructions below to help us provide you with the best treatment possible.

Pre-operative instructions

If you are scheduled to undergo surgery under general anaesthesia or analgesic sedation, do not eat or drink anything (including water) after midnight prior to your surgery unless otherwise instructed by the anaesthetist. Refrain from smoking.

If surgery is to be performed under local anaesthesia, eat and drink normally to ensure circulatory stability.

You can take your medication as usual with a sip of water prior to surgery. Remember to discuss this once again with the anaethesist or you surgeon because there are some exceptions to be considered (e.g. Metformin).

If you are taking aspirin (ASS), Plavix, Marcumar, Xarelto or other medication for anticoagulation, do not discontinue taking these without checking with your prescribing doctor. In some cases it may be necessary to replace these anticoagulant drugs by medications that are better to control. Please click here for more information about coagulation disorders.

Inform your surgeon and anaesthetist in advance about your medications (both over-the-counter and prescription drugs) and medical history (blood pressure, vascular disorders, infarction, diabetes, pulmonary conditions, epilepsy, allergies) to avoid complications during anaesthesia.

If you develop a cold or infection of any kind, elective surgery will have to be postponed.

In women, major procedures should be performed outside the menstrual period.

Tooth replacements (e.g. prostheses, partial dentures, telescopic dentures) as well as contact lenses, jewellery (earrings etc.) and body piercings should be removed prior to surgery.

If you are scheduled to undergo major surgery (especially aesthetic surgery), refrain from smoking one week prior to and two weeks after the procedure. Smoking has a significant influence on blood circulation in the facial region and contributes to delayed wound healing, especially in the oral cavity or facial skin. So smoking can have an adverse impact on the outcome of the procedure.

A healthy and balanced diet is important to strengthen your overall health and promote wound healing.

Please follow these instructions to avoid any complications during and after anaesthesia.
